The image of the doll and the non-violent conflict solving story are very important to me as a delivery system for children (and adults) to understand kindness, compassion, and Joy. Constructive joy, a kind of joy that comes from a humane place.
Many therapists, social workers, family physicians and pediatricians (as well as many parents) love to keep the doll around (on the book shelf) so that kids have the smile in their line of sight. The
book is also an important part of the mission for kindness.
In our world of immediate gratification and short response deriving from "smart"-phones, tablets and other computers, kids have forgotten the wonders of reading, waiting, discussing things and finding other point of views... Kids are becoming addicts with all the pathological characteristics associated with this disorder. Books that they want to read is an important part of the bigger whole. the path for a less violent, egocentric, and abusive generation.
In my practice, I try to give out a book and a doll to every family with children. The do love it and it does seem to make a change. I also keep one set in the office (evoking curiosity = beginning of change).
